Perhaps the most basic metric of all is reach – meaning how many people are likely to see the influencer’s post. This can be measured in a rudimentary way by their number of followers on networks like Facebook and Twitter. However, it’s best to go even more in depth and find out their monthly page views and per post impressions – this will result in a more accurate number.
Influencers, and particularly bloggers, are unlikely to work with or respond well to brands that are not relevant to their blog. Simply put, don’t just send out your pitch to everyone. A car blog is unlikely to be interested in your new beauty product. Instead, they will see that you didn’t put effort into actually seeing what their blog is about, and will mark you as an irrelevant spammer. This will hurt your credibility with bloggers. Instead, first consider your target demographic and the influencer’s. Does your target audience cross over with theirs? Are they in a similar age group? Do they have the same questions and concerns? Secondly, look at the blog itself. Do the blogger’s values correspond with yours? Do you even want this blogger representing your brand? Put in the time to find out before it’s too late.
Some blogs churn out content without any specific engagement. But just because someone has a lot of followers and posts doesn’t mean they are influential with their audience. Take a look at how many people actually comment and like the posts, and whether the comments really engage with the content. Is that number rising? Then it’s likely that the blogger really is an influential figure that can encourage the reader into making a purchase.
