Everyday millennials are telling their world their stories in a snap, with a follow-back, or via a DM, also known as a direct message. The rest is history, but without the rise of social networking, there’s a chance that advertisers would still be doing things the old-fashioned way and it would not be effective.

If you go to the website of almost any company, you’re going to see more than a basic blog. In addition to consistently published blog posts, you’re going to see an Instagram account that shows the owner of your favorite flower company enjoying dinner with her husband on their wedding anniversary. You may see your veterinarian sharing a Snap Story while calming a jittery pooch. Some say that this generation is oversharing, but marketers and communication degree holders are actually getting valuable information that would normally take them decades to collect. It isn’t oversharing, it’s connecting on a level that can only be performed if you are online.

What Comes After Millennials?

Millennials are the biggest generation of consumers alive today in terms of sheer numbers, but there are future generations that are soon to come of age. Generation iGen are all still kids, for now at least. They are being brought up to learn on tablets, computers, and laptops in school instead of writing with pens and papers. This generation isn’t even being taught cursive writing, but they are tested on their keyboarding skills. Learning about millennials will help master in communications graduates to create advertisements that consumers respond to strongly.

Millennials are kind of like Baby Boomers, only younger. They’ve been paving the way in technology and new discoveries and they’re more concerned with the environment than older generations.
