What to do if you have writer’s block
No matter how far along your journey you may be as a writer, each and every creative mind will suffer from writer’s block at some point in their lives. If you have a strict deadline to meet or are trying to finish a book or magazine article for a stressed and snappy editor, then this can cause a lot of late nights, anguish and not to mention seriously impact your overall health and wellbeing. You may find yourself feeling overwhelmed, with a reduced appetite, and even begin to feel helpless and doubt your talents as a writer. However, there is no reason why you should let writer’s block stop you from being proactive and productive if you know just how to tackle this beast head-on.
You could begin by writing down a list of all the factors that could be causing your writer’s block; do you enjoy working from a café rather than working at home? Have you just moved into a new apartment and are finding it hard to get into the groove? Perhaps you have made a few serious diet and lifestyle changes, such as cutting out caffeine that could be making your brain feel like mush? If you are finding it hard to feel inspired and sleep, then, believe it or not, these two factors go hand in hand. Even if you are not tired, make sure that you tuck yourself up at your usual bedtime with a cup of herbal tea, and use this time to brainstorm new ideas or thoughts. Leave a pad by the side of your bed, so that if you wake up in the small hours, you can write down your dreams and ideas. Come morning; you will have a full pad of musings that will help you start the day feeling creative and engaged.
Set up a writing schedule
If you are suffering from writer’s block, but find yourself struggling to get enough words down on a page on a daily basis, then this is a sign that it is high time to establish a writing schedule for yourself. If you are writing a novel, then make sure to meet your daily quota. Whereas if your work is copywriting, brand or research-based, then this might be harder to establish. Discuss your daily targets with your client to make sure that they are on board with your proposal. If you write articles or poems, or pieces that are even paid by the word, then your job may be slightly easier. Setting up a writing schedule will enable you to better manage your time – you might not be allowed a coffee break until you meet with your word target. Give yourself mini rewards and perks so that you get the words on the page in a timely, creative and engaging manner.
Take some time out
If you are writing about a particularly obscure or difficult topic, and find yourself really struggling, it may be worth taking some time out. Depending on the deadline, a few days away from the project can help refresh your mind so you can come back prepared. If you are able to take a trip, maybe arrange to stay with friends, be that camping, or a visit to a nearby city to help unwind and distract. You can drive yourself mad going over the same material, but sometimes taking a step back is the best thing you can do, to return with fresh ideas a few days later. This might not sound like the most obvious solution if you are suffering from writer’s block but removing all the stresses and pressures that are preventing you from getting the words on your page could soon unstick your block. Put on some relaxing music, run a warm bath and light a few candles to create a warm and welcoming environment in which to work. If you find it helps to work with some background noise, then you could try putting on your favorite music or the radio in the background as you write. If you create unnecessary stress and tension for yourself, then this will impact your ability to write. So, try to slow down, unwind and welcome those all-important words to just flow.
Set and stick to your deadlines
If you find it hard to stick to deadlines and are permanently finding yourself submitting your work late, then now is your time to make a change for the better. It is incredibly important to stick to deadlines across all aspects of life, from work to personal commitments. So, by teaching yourself how to create and make deadlines, you may even find yourself improving your relationships and behavior too. Even if you work from home there is no reason why you cannot view your writing like a typical nine-to-five job, so make sure that you treat it just as you would as if you were in the workplace. Begin to stick to your deadlines, and you may even find yourself gaining new clients.
