About

Holidays are a time to eat, drink and be merry. But not everyone will want drinks that feature alcohol. Whether you’re hosting a family-friendly event or providing something festive for designated drivers, here are a few spirited ideas to mix things up at the bar — without actual spirits.

Sleigh Driver

1 c. water

½ c. sugar

2-inch piece of ginger

3 pears, chopped

2 quarts apple cider

1 lemon, halved and sliced

1 Tbsp. ground allspice

1 c. cranberries

2 Tbsp. vanilla extract

Directions: Boil water, sugar, ginger and one pear in a saucepan, stirring occasionally, over medium-high heat. Remove solids with strainer and return liquid to saucepan. Stir in remaining pears, apple cider, lemon and allspice over medium-high heat for 15 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve in mugs.

Chai Blossom

2 chai tea bags

1 c. boiling water

½ c. sugar

½ c. lime juice

Club soda

4 star anise pods

4 lemon twists

Directions: Let chai tea bags and boiling water sit, covered, in a small bowl for 8 to 10 minutes. Add sugar. Remove tea bags and allow the syrup to cool. Combine syrup and lime juice in a pitcher. Pour into four glasses and top with club soda. Add star anise pods and lemon twists as garnishes.

Pear Tree

1 c. ice

1/3 c. pear juice

2 Tbsp. lemon-lime juice

2 Tbsp. simple syrup

4 mint leaves

1 mint sprig

Directions: Combine all ingredients, except mint sprig, in a shaker, and mix for 10 seconds. Pour into glass to serve. Garnish with mint sprig.

Frost Bite Mocktail

Ice

1 oz. lime juice

1 oz. pineapple juice

2 oz. white grape juice

Mint leaves

Blueberries

Lemon-lime soda

Directions: Mix first three ingredients in cocktail shaker. Add the next three ingredients, crushing the blueberries with a spoon. Mix together and then strain into ice-filled glasses. Top with lemon-lime soda. Garnish with additional blueberries as desired.

Cran-Raspberry Martini

Ice

1 Tbsp. crushed raspberries

2 Tbsp. lime juice

½ c. cranberry juice

Raspberry-flavored sparkling water

Sugar

Directions: Mix first three ingredients in shaker. Add next two ingredients, mix and pour into sugar-rimmed glasses. Garnish with additional raspberries as desired.

Mexican Hot Chocolate

1 c. water

4 c. whole milk

8 oz. chocolate chips

2 Tbsp. sugar

2 tsp. vanilla extract

½ tsp. chili powder

¼ tsp. cinnamon

Pinch of salt

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan over medium heat. Whisk frequently until the liquid is hot (about 8 minutes). Pour into mugs.
