In partnership with The Woolmark Company and organized by the MA*GA Art Museum, the new exhibition MISSONI, ART, COLOUR will open in London on6 May 2016. It includes over 40 paintings by European artists from the 20th century, such as Gino Severini, Lucio Fontana and Sonia Delaunay, who have influenced the creative process of Missoni over the course of its long creative, cultural and artistic journey. The works of art on display are drawn from the MA*GA Museum and from private collections in Italy with many have never been previously shown in the UK. The exhibition showcases a large selection of looks created since 1953 by Rosita Missoni and from 1997 by Angela Missoni as well as previously unseen textile studies, paintings and Arazzi Ottavio Missoni.
The exhibition, previously held at MA*GA Art Museum in Gallarate, Italy from 19 April 2015 to 24 January 2016, explores the influence of 20th century European art on the fashion and textile designs of Ottavio and Rosita Missoni
The exhibition is curated by Luciano Caramel, Art Critic and Historian who has served as commissioner of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale, Luca Missoni, Artistic Director of the Missoni Archive and Emma Zanella, Director of MA*GA Art Museum and Contemporary Art Historian and Museologist.
“This exhibition is designed to showcase the creative process of knitting artwork into fashion forms. It’s always a great challenge to rediscover the potential of our colourful heritage to make unique, positive experiences. I am pleased that The Woolmark Company will be our partner in bringing this exhibition to London. Wool is an essential ingredient in our work, so much so that wool has practically become a synonym for Missoni: Missoni, knit, wool; wool, knit, Missoni.” commented Luca Missoni, Director of the Missoni Archive.
